Connecting the Cow Herd to the Carcass

چکیده

After years of talking about it, valuebased marketing of beef has become a reality. As a result, carcass traits are receiving increased emphasis when breeding decisions are made. There is some debate within the beef industry whether too much emphasis is being placed on the end-product. This question is raised because unit cost of production, reproduction, and early growth are still the factors that have the greatest impact on profitability in cow-calf herds. But as the industry moves toward true value-based marketing and more cattle are sold on grids or formulas, traits related to the end-product will likely increase in economic importance.

Genetics of Reproduction: Considerations for Sire Selection

genetic selection to improve economically important traits. Most recently, much of that progress has been through the implementation of expected progeny differences (EPDs). Expected progeny differences make it possible to compare the genetic merit of two or more animals for any number of traits. Most EPDs involve growth or carcass traits, because most producers are paid by the pound, or in some...

Estimation of Economic Values for Fertility, Stillbirth and Milk Production Traits in Iranian Holstein Dairy Cows

The objective of present study was to derive the economic values for number of inseminations to conception, calving interval, milk yield and stillbirth, using economic data of 10 Iranian Holstein herds. The economic values were derived by using the profit function methods and differentiating a profit equation with respect to the traits of interest. The cow fertility costs herd amortization or r...

Invited review: Methods to determine body fat reserves in the dairy cow with special regard to ultrasonographic measurement of backfat thickness.

As the dairy cow uses body energy reserves in early lactation, body condition scoring has become an integral part of dairy herd management. Several methods based on visual and tactile evaluation have been developed. Problems caused by the subjectivity of these techniques have been reported. Alternative approaches to predict energy reserves or energy balance in dairy cattle include metabolic pro...
